UCLA Health: integrative care at the bedside

Patients reported less stress and pain and better sleep. Music, aromatherapy, meditation and Reiki were combined, so these experiences do not isolate Reiki’s effect.

UCLA bedside support

The 2022 report follows Tammy Litrov’s roughly 20-minute session: permission, calming music, optional lavender, body-scan meditation and light-touch/hands-off Reiki. Patients describe less stress or pain and better sleep. Observations concern the combined programme, without isolating Reiki’s effects.

Editorial perspective

This example makes a warm, calm space within hospital care tangible. Positive patient feedback is valuable; because music, meditation, aroma and Reiki were combined, the experience concerns the whole visit.

EVIDENCE IN CONTEXT

Distinguishing use from evidence

These independent institutional summaries distinguish mental health, mind–body relationships and complementary practices. Psychological factors do not cause all illnesses. Findings about relaxation or psychotherapy cannot be transferred to Reiki or devices. Offering Reiki in a hospital does not establish therapeutic efficacy or imply endorsement of WorkNestAcademy. Reiki does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. NCCIH states that effectiveness for health purposes has not been clearly demonstrated.
